Plastics Process Selection - Materials Types |
|
Not all materials can be processed in the same way. Some materials cannot, in fact be processed by certain methods. There are often other restrictions on the processing of certain materials by certain processes - PVC-U can be easily injection moulded but processors are sometimes wary of using PVC-U in injection moulding machines because of the tendency to suffer high wear and corrosion of the machine and tooling.
Consult a plastics technologist when in doubt!
The abbreviations for the plastics materials are given in Polymer Names.
For more details on the characteristics of each processing method see the page on Polymer Processing.
