industrial survey programme.
Surveys are available for plastics processing companies from Tangram
Technology Ltd. - specialist consulting engineers for plastics processing.
What is the Carbon Trust?
The Carbon Trust provides companies and other organisations with advice on energy efficiency.
The programme is backed by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural
Affairs, the Scottish Executive, Invest Northern Ireland and the National
Assembly for Wales.
How can the Carbon Trust help?
The Carbon Trust provides a range of services to help you to identify, and
then implement opportunities for energy efficiency to save money and reduce
emissions of carbon dioxide, the principal greenhouse gas. The current
services include:
- Telephone helpline advice - Freephone 0800 58 57 94
- Surveys of energy saving opportunities
- Advice on incorporating energy savings into the design of new buildings
or refurbishments
- Interest free loans of up to £50,000 for investing in energy efficiency
for SMEs. (These are private sector organisations with less than 250 employees, an annual turnover of less than £25 million and not more than 25% of the capital or voting rights owned by an enterprise that is not itself a SME).
- Free publications on saving energy and staff awareness posters and
stickers
- Training events.
Most of these services are free of charge, but not all are available to all
types and sizes of organisation. This note provides specific details about our
programme of site visits to assist organisations become more energy efficient.
A separate application form is available for organisations wishing to obtain
advice on design of new or refurbished buildings.
Are you eligible for a site survey?
All organisations with an energy bill (cumulative spend on gas, electricity
and other fuels) greater than £10k pa (and a commitment to act upon the
advice received as far as is practicable), are eligible to receive a site
visit to identify energy saving opportunities. The table below illustrates the
type support available. The thresholds shown are flexible and individual
applications will be considered on their merits. The Carbon Trust does not guarantee
to provide any particular type of visit.

What types of site surveys are available?
For sites and organisations with an energy bill of greater than about £50k
pa a wider range of site surveys are available from the Carbon Trust tailored to
the specific circumstances and needs. Surveys that are free of charge include:
- Initial Opportunities Assessment - For organisations with limited
experience of implementing energy efficiency. This survey is designed to
provide advice on how to take the first steps to cutting energy costs and
consumption. The action plan will identify up to 10 energy saving
opportunities from a range of energy uses on the site most of which will
pay for themselves within a year.
- Specific Opportunities Assessment - For organisations that have
already implemented a range of energy efficiency measures and wish to
build upon their experience. The consultant will develop an action plan
that provides a more detailed evaluation of a more limited range of energy
uses on the site that are identified as offering good energy saving opportunities.
- Energy Management Assessment - For organisations with
considerable experience of implementing energy efficiency measures that
are only interested in improving energy management practices to sustain
the improvements already achieved.
- Multiple Site Survey - For organisations with more than 5 sites,
the Carbon Trust will undertake surveys at a sample of sites in order to produce an action
plan to reduce energy use across the organisation as a whole.
- Partnership - For organisations with the potential and commitment
to achieve substantial savings in carbon dioxide emissions the Carbon
Trust will provide a bespoke programme of support. At present, the Carbon
Trust
only offer Partnerships to around 120 organisations each year.
Each of the site survey products listed above is free of charge. In
addition, the Carbon Trust also part funds Detailed Surveys. A Detailed Survey
investigates the feasibility and potential savings from a specific energy
saving opportunity, such as replacement of equipment with significant energy

How do you apply?
Whichever of the Carbon Trust survey products you are interested in,
contact Tangram Technology for further details. any information provided to
Tangram or the Carbon Trust will be treated with the strictest of confidence.
If you have previously received a Carbon Trust (previously called Action Energy) survey you may still be
eligible for further support.
What happens next?
On receiving the application you will usually be called by a Client Manager to discuss the application, requirements and agree the service
to be provided. During this call the Carbon Trust will also explain what is
expected of your organisation in return for being provided with the support.
Once we have agreed the service to be provided we will appoint one of our
independently accredited consultants who will arrange to visit to visit your
organisation's premises and conduct a review of your current energy usage to
identify potential energy saving opportunities. The site survey typically
takes between one and five days.
The outcome of the visit will be a realistic action plan, tailored to your
organisations needs with recommendations to save energy and advice on how to
achieve these. Measures range from no cost house-keeping improvements to
suggestions to replace/upgrade equipment such as motors, lighting, heating and
process systems.
You will be provided with an opportunity to comment upon draft report
before the final version is delivered.
Follow-up support
After you have received the final report you will be contacted by your
Client Manager to provide feedback on the service we have provided.
Periodically, you may also be called to find out what progress you are making
with implementing the actions. If appropriate, the Carbon Trust will commission
follow-up support to help you to implement some of the energy saving
opportunities in the action plan. Follow-up support may consist of telephone
advice, training, provision of free publications, or where appropriate further
visits or a Carbon Trust loan.
Your commitment
In return for receiving free or subsidised advice the Carbon Trust requests
that your organisation provide:
- Energy data for at least the last 12 months prior to the survey
- Access to the consultant to all relevant parts of the site and to a
range of staff during the survey
- Comments on the draft report provided by the consultant
- A completed feedback form on the service you have received following
receipt of the final report
- An opportunity for our consultant to present the findings of the survey
to senior management within your organisation
- A commitment to implement the practical low and no cost recommendations
identified during the survey
- Information on actions implemented by your organisation as a result of
the survey 6 to 12 months after this has been completed.
Conditions
Whilst all advice is given in good faith, it is your responsibility to
confirm the applicability and appropriateness of any advice offered.
- Confidentiality, the Carbon Trust and its consultants will not use any
information obtained in the course of this survey in any way that
identifies individuals or their organisation without your agreement.
However, the Government may use generic and non-attributable information
collected over the course of the survey to guide future policy and
activity, to optimise use of resources, and to offer your organisation
further assistance.
- Data Protection As a result of applying for a Carbon Trust service, your details will be stored on a database which may be used to
send you information on other Carbon Trust and related Government
